The good thing is this: Round-tripping has become a lot easier with both, Adobe and DaVinci Resolve. Adobe After Effects for example uses layers while Fusion is based around nodes. These are very different applications, though. If you’re a Adobe user you could compare Resolve to Premiere Pro (editing and grading), Audition (audio) and After Effects (compositing). Installation files for Resolve 15 plus a massive reference manual. Now, with version 15 their latest acquisition has been merged into Resolve: Fusion, which is an advanced node based compositing tool. Then came Fairlight, a full-fleged suite of audio tools for manipulating and mastering audio. After that a NLE style video editor was added with version 10 in 2013. When they acquired Resolve it was just a color correction and grading tool. In contrast to Adobe whose approach is to develop a whole suite of dedicated apps, Blackmagic has put all the features of several acquisitions straight into their main software tool: DaVinci Resolve. The above video came out just after the announcement of Resolve 15 so there might be slight changes to some features but you get a pretty good idea of the deep integration of Fusion and Fairlight into Resolve. Watch the video below for a fairly extensive overview of the new features: The tabs (as in: workspaces) at the bottom of the screen now include: Media, Edit, Fusion, Color, Fairlight and Deliver. If you already played around a little with previous beta versions you know what’s coming: Fusion is now an integrated part of Resolve. Let’s move on to the features of Resolve 15. Customers with DaVinci Resolve Studio dongles and activation keys, and those with Fusion Studio dongles can download and use DaVinci Resolve Studio v15 at no cost. But it's good to at least have the option to run older Fusion versions. I'm not saying you'll definitely want to use Fusion 9 instead of 16, as there are performance and other benefits in 16. There are quite a number of Fusion experts who still use Fusion 9 for this reason. If you do need to buy a new license dongle, I strongly recommend to buy the Fusion Studio dongle because it provides the unlimited network rendering, plus it can run Fusion Studio 9, which has a much more flexible UI. You will have to pay again, and buy a dongle. If however you have the Resolve Studio activation key, I'm afraid you cannot run Fusion Studio. So, if you have the Resolve Studio dongle, you're in luck: You can download Fusion Studio 16.2.4 from Blackmagic Support and use it today. Can run Resolve 15 and 16, but not older, but can run Fusion Studio back to version 7 or 8 I think. Also provides unlimited network render nodes, ie allowing local network rendering between the Fusion Studio machine, and unlimited Render Nodes. Fusion Studio USB dongle = provides one seat for Resolve Studio and Fusion Studio. Enables running old versions of Resolve (eg back to version 8), but not older versions of Fusion Studio (can only run Fusion Studio 16 and later).ģ. Resolve Studio USB dongle = provides one seat for Resolve Studio and Fusion Studio. Same applies to the Mac App Store version of Resolve Studio (though that may be only one seat, not sure.)Ģ. Resolve Studio Activation Key = provides two simultaneous seats for Resolve Studio only. OK, the licensing situation is a bit complex - and very poorly explained, as you found.ġ.
